We are pleased to share that Grupo Pantaleon’s Monte Rosa, Pánuco, and El Mante sugar mills were featured as case studies in a prominent publication highlighting how the sugarcane and sugar beet agroindustry across 14 Latin American countries contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
These case studies were presented by the Latin American Sugar Producers Union (UNALA)—currently chaired by Guatemala—during an official event held at the Delegates Dining Room of the United Nations headquarters in New York.
This recognition reaffirms our commitment to building a more just, prosperous, and harmonious future with the planet, through concrete actions that positively impact our communities, collaborators, and the environment.
Below is a brief summary of the featured case studies, in which Grupo Pantaleon’s sugar mills stood out:
SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being
From Ingenio Pánuco and Ingenio El Mante in Mexico, we support the well-being of our communities through mobile clinics, preventive health campaigns, and specialized medical care. At Ingenio Monte Rosa in Nicaragua, we implement the Total Worker Health program, promoting the physical and mental well-being of our employees through epidemiological monitoring and continuous education.
SDG 4 – Quality Education
Through Fundación Pantaleon, we promote access to quality education in the communities surrounding our sugar mills in Mexico. We do this by establishing computer labs, implementing sports programs with a formative approach, offering scholarships and academic incentives, and providing technical training in agricultural topics.
SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation
At Ingenio Monte Rosa in Nicaragua, we develop sustainable solutions for water access. Through the Agua para Todos (Water for All) program, we ensure potable water in rural communities. In addition, we operate an industrial water treatment system that allows us to reuse up to 70% of the water for agricultural purposes, optimizing resource use and reducing pressure on natural sources.
SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
At Ingenio Pánuco in Mexico, we promote economic empowerment for women in the community through the creation of microenterprises. Participants receive technical training, tools, and financial support to launch businesses such as bakeries, beauty salons, and water purification centers—generating income and local employment.
SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
In collaboration with local authorities and communities, Ingenio El Mante contributes to more sustainable and welcoming urban environments. We reforested Alameda Park and rehabilitated Boulevard Aarón Sáenz, promoting green, safe public spaces for community gathering and recreation.
SDG 14 – Life Below Water
From Ingenio Pánuco, we encourage environmental education and marine conservation through beach clean-ups and turtle release activities. These initiatives engage local families and strengthen our commitment to protecting coastal ecosystems.
SDG 15 – Life on Land
Aware of the value of our ecosystems, we have driven reforestation and restoration efforts. At Ingenio El Mante, we planted over 1,100 native trees, released juvenile fish into local water bodies, and rehabilitated natural spaces to strengthen biodiversity and ecological balance.
